And that was it. It ended up pretty much as expected in the end. The storm came in froze all of us in for the remainder of our days. Roads were closed. Activities cancelled. Flights cancelled. We were grounded in Reykjavik. The hostels were filled with people franticly re-booking dorm beds, changing travel plans, calls home informing loved ones of the situation and telling employers they wouldn’t be coming to work for another few days. When the flights finally temporarily resumed days later it was never certain who was going to make it out or not. We would say our goodbyes as they headed to the airport only to see them back in the bar later that night. Little short term reunions.
Planes would sit on the tarmac waiting for that little window in the storm to safely fly out. Some made it out, some were returned to the city to try again. So it was a daily and often hourly revolving situation as everyone waited around.

In the meantime, we had a great time experiencing the amazing things that Reykjavik has to offer. This is certainly a fantastic place to be stuck. They know how to handle these conditions and have a great time. The foods, drinks, music and dancing … the conversations and gatherings by the fireplace - in a sense we were all stranded here together and we enjoyed every minute of it.
I still had hope that I’d get to see the lights. I often woke myself up throughout the night to check the solar index and glance out the window or stroll through the empty town to see if there was a brief clear in the sky. I really kept hoping for that little miracle. I’d come all this way. I gave it every chance that I could, but it was not to be on this trip. As disappointed as we were that we missed the northern lights, we pledged to return; caught our flight and headed back to the Cali.
